hey @staff kindly stop marking this stuff under sensitive content

This is awesome.

It’s also worth spreading around that you do not have to take an oath on a Bible. If they’ll let her use this, then you can use pretty much any book, which might matter for atheists and people who’s religion lacks sacred texts.

it literally doesn’t say anywhere in any law that you have to swear on a bible

Okay so I just got off the phone with them. I talked to a trans girl named Aurora & she was super helpful! She gave me a few doctors to talk to & encouraged me to seek therapy instead of just rushing to get my pills. She literally found a trans friendly therapist in my town & I would definitely recommend giving them a call!

you know that dumbass Forbes article advocating for Amazon stores to replace public libraries? It was taken down cause the author got dragged so hard by like everyone who has ever entered a library in their life & now Forbes released a statement basically calling the author of the original op-ed “deeply misinformed” lmao

“Libraries play an important role in our society. This article was outside of this contributor’s specific area of expertise, and has since been removed.”

Don’t fuck with libraries.

You know, mabes we socialist types should proactively do something to help our local libraries before capitalists find ways of shutting them down for good.  Some kind of mass fundraiser or something, I don’t know what.  But they seem like the last holdout for people who believe that everyone has a right to resources, no questions asked.

For many people, the library is the one place they can access the internet, which may in turn be the only way they can apply for jobs or get schoolwork done.

Other technology is also available for use at a library, such as a copier or a printer (ours even has a 3D printer open to the public).

The library is a safe place to go if it’s raining or really cold outside.

Children are enabled to read more books than their allowance could ever possibly afford, and for kids from lower-income backgrounds, it might be their only access to books at all.

Lots of libraries provide classes that are needed in their community, whether it’s ESL or literacy or parenting or what have you.  Free of charge.

You can even borrow movies or seasons of TV shows instead of springing for Netflix.

And there is no shame whatsoever in visiting one.  There is no social stigma attached to the library, it’s for everyone, period.

Any librarians with ideas for how we could help keep them going?

Support the Library Defense Network! They’re a leftist org made up of library workers and they organize communities to prevent public library closures.

THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And for the boys, no not wanting it doesn’t make you gay, less of a man, or anything to that effect, you’re allowed to say no too, and when she says “am I just not hot enoughy for you” that is an attempt to guilt you into sex.

Reblogging for IMPORTANT addition.

You are allowed to only sleep with people you like & WHEN you want to. Don’t let anyone else tell you different, ever.

I’m all for fighting for marriage equality in the LGBT community. But we’re so focused on that no one knows about this problem.

W…wait Thats a thing????

Yep! The man I refer to as my husband? We aren’t actually married. We can’t be.

If I married him, the government would literally expect me to care for him and be his sole source of income. He would lose all of his benefits, including SSDI. Spouses are expected to share income and that effects ALL of his benefits, even his health insurance. We simply can’t afford to be married.

But it goes even further than that. If I were disabled, our incomes would STILL be combined, meaning BOTH of us would have our benefits cut.

For people reviving supplemental income, their benefits can be cut anywhere from 25% of their current income all the way down to 0%

In fact, one of the stipulations of receiving income under the adult disabled child program (which provides benefits for people who were disabled before age 22) is that they LITERALLY never be married.

I normally don’t link to blog posts as resources, but since social service resource sites like to dress this problem up and make it seem smaller than it really is, I’m gonna call it appropriate! Check it out!

I’m upset about the situation in case you couldn’t tell.

Whoa. I didnt know this was a thing.

Opinion | I Know What Incarceration Does to Families. It Happened to Mine.

wearejapanese:

By Michiko Kakutani

They were described as vermin who were infesting America. They were deemed a national security threat to the United States, rounded up and sent to internment camps, where they were housed in military-style barracks behind barbed wire and watched over by armed officers in guard towers. There was no due process, no risk assessment, no effort to assess who might actually pose a threat and who just happened to look like “the enemy.” Instead, tens of thousands of men, women and children were subject to “removal” because, as one government report put it, “an exact separation of the ‘sheep from the goats’ was unfeasible.”

My mother’s family was among the 120,000 people of Japanese descent on the West Coast who were dispatched to internment camps during World War II. The faded photo of my mother, my aunt and my grandparents, standing in front of the Topaz Relocation Center barracks, where they were incarcerated in the Utah desert in 1942, used to feel like an artifact from a thankfully distant era — an illustration from a history lesson about what a former first lady, Laura Bush, last month called “one of the most shameful episodes in U.S. history.”

And yet today in America under President Trump, the news is filled with pictures and stories of families and children being held in detention centers, and reports that the Pentagon is preparing to house as many as 20,000 “unaccompanied alien children” on American military bases.

History is repeating itself. This time without even the pretext of war, and with added heartbreaking cruelty. Under Mr. Trump’s “zero tolerance” border enforcement policy, nearly 3,000 children were separated from their parents, and while the administration later halted these separations, it neglected to keep proper records and is now struggling to find and reunite families.

Once again, national safety is invoked to justify the roundup of whole groups of people. Once again, racist stereotypes are being used by politicians to ramp up fear and hatred. And once again, lies are being used to justify actions that violate the most fundamental American ideals of freedom, equality and tolerance.

Every time I find a take like this in the wild, I am going to share it, because it is just so fucking bizzare. These people honestly believe that capitalism is like an eternal principle. No wonder our society is so messed up.

Humans have organized themselves in countless ways. A system based on private property and wage labor has only existed for 300 years.

This is literally a pathology. Call it out when you see it.

Interestingly enough…out of the countless ways human societies have been organized, literally zero have actually been based on a barter system. The “prehistoric man” (at some time…somewhere…) “trading arrowheads for furs” idea is a fantasy that Adam Smith had, which economists have been repeating as fact ever since.

This is one hundred percent true. Everybody go read Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Graeber

So many claim that human nature is to take over territory and hoard wealth and make war for profit. And yes, humans have fought and had disputes longer than we’ve been human. But compassion and empathy are also natural traits of humans. It’s seen in anthropology, in animal behavioralist’s studies, and is no less a part of our natural inclinations than selfishness. The Age of Empathy by Frans de Waal is a good read on this subject.

“When they go low, we go high, and I went as high as I could”: “Lady of Liberty” Therese Patricia Okoumou speaks out

Okoumou, a naturalized citizen, was released on her own recognizance today, July 5, after being arrested yesterday for climbing to the foot of the Statue of Liberty. Her attorney, Rhiya Trivedi, is representing her pro bono. She will be back in court August 3.

Here is Okoumou’s full statement:

Good afternoon everyone, thank you for being here. It’s been a rough 24 hours for me and some of you. I wanna thank Rise and Resist [crowd cheering] for their dedication in the work that they do, for their support for equality and social justice.

As you know by now I am from the Republic of Congo. I came in this country 1994.

I also wanna thank the United States Park Police, more specifically Officer D’Alessandro, they’ve been very very wonderful to me. Talking about respect, courtesy, professionalism, I think the NYPD can learn something or two from them, from the United States Park Police.

Michelle Obama, our beloved First Lady that I care so much about, said “When they go low, we go high,” and I went as high as I could. [laughter and cheers]

Trump has wrecked this country apart. It is depressing, it is outrageous. I can say a lot of things about this monster, but I will stop at this: His draconian zero-tolerance policy on immigration has to go. In a democracy we do not rip children — we do not put children in cages. Period. There is no debating it. Nothing you can say to me will justify putting children in cages. Only a stupid unintelligent coward, an insecure — I will add a maniac — will rip a tender-age child from its mother. Reunite the children now. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

It seems that Okoumou is not in need of donations for now, and there are no official funding campaigns set up for her now, but if that changes I will post that information as soon as possible. You can also follow Rise and Resist on Twitter for more updates.

Seashell Souvenirs Are Killing Protected Marine Life

strangebiology:

Seashells are wildlife products, just like fur and bones and ivory. There are ways to get them ethically but if a shopkeep says they got hundreds of polished conch and nautilus shells from people who find them already dead on the beach, that’s probably not true.

This article doesn’t mention whether or not a significant portion of shells at beach gift shops come as leftovers from animals harvested for their meat, but that’s what Atlantic Coral Enterprise claims is the source of “the majority” of their products.
