this, folks, is exactly what I’m apprehensive about when it comes to Solarpunk.
The projects described in this article are fundamentally opposed to Solarpunk. Seasteading in its current form is run by Libertarians in Silicon Valley with lots of money envisioning their version of Utopia. Rich people will form communities in the ocean that exploit land-dwelling vagabonds. It is fundamentally classist and anti-communist, and isolationist (in the sense that these communities make an eco-friendly facade, while exporting their exploitative practice.)
But damn, if those cities don’t look Solarpunk. A lot of the aesthetic of Solarpunk thrives on these sorts of green (the color, not the euphemism) environmentally-resistant public spaces and planned spaces. Hell, I could imagine a Solarpunk floating city, given the vision was a teensy bit less isolationist-libertarian.
My apprehension is not a rejection of Solarpunk – I think Solarpunk and what it stands for is awesome. And in many ways, I can’t even say that Solarpunk voices are mistakenly sharing unthoughtful solutions to environmental disasters. Let pieces like these remind us that it’s possible to look Solarpunk and not embody its ideals, and that we should never support a project without examining its politics (not just its aesthetic).
(And let me reiterate that I am not accusing anyone in particular of doing this, or that there even is anyone embracing solarpunk that does this. In some way, this reminder is for myself as much as it is for whoever’s reading this).
hey queer eye fans !! I haven’t seen any posts about it on Tumblr yet so I thought I’d spread it around myself. Jonathan has been posting Instagram stories asking for donations for Mama Tamye and the town of Gay, Georgia. Some industry is planning to build a rock quarry in their county, and the community desperately doesn’t want it. The fundraiser will pay for legal fees and help take down the quarry. Here’s the link to donate to the cause !
Holy fuck I did not realize how long this song is from the pov of an animator. Like a little over 4 minutes at 24 frames/second? That’s a LOT, but like not terrifying right? WRONG! DEAD WRONG!
I put the song into OpenToonz…. It’s over 6,500 frames. I did the math just to double check cuz that seems ridiculous. It’s accurate. The upside is now I actually have an audible gauge for how slowed down my animation is due to lag, and I can time things better.
But I’m realizing for the first time, just how fast 24 fps is. Cuz in Photoshop, it’ll say it’s going 24 but really it’s going closer to like 15 if I had to guess, because of lag. So this whole time I thought I’d been used to animating at 24 fps. I WAS NOT PREPARED.
Sometimes I re-realize how long Adrien/Chat’s legs are??? Like… He’s practically a clamp bishounen. Also sometimes I forget that it’s Adrien in the suit. Or rather I know it but I don’t fully comprehend it
My therapist has LITERALLY told me that I can’t start any more projects till I’ve finished my animation one cuz I was complaining about how I never finish anything… So I have started my second animation project tonight because I’m a masochist
