You are allowed to grieve the years you lost to mental illness. You’re allowed to be mad that it happened to you. You’re allowed to pine after the person you might have been had it been different. But don’t let that get in the way of your growing into your new self and following a wholly new path for your life.
You shouldn’t be treating nb people like the secret sexy 3rd gender. Nb people don’t look like a mash of male and female, they’re not sexy androgynous twinks
white skinny androgynous nb people reblogging this and saying shit like “Well this is what I look like! So I feel represented!” Are literally part of the problem. I’m not saying that no nb people are white/skinny/andro, I’m saying that those are the only type of nb bodies that get represented
its nice, isnt it, when nonbinary people are visibly distinct from binary people? its easy, isnt it? you can remember to use “they” for people who have no visible breasts or beards, right? no need to challenge the notion of male vs female if nonbinary people have their own look, isnt that right?
its time to step the fuck up and really understand that nonbinary looks like anybody. nonbinary looks like you. nonbinary looks like your family and friends and it looks like the strangers who you thoughtlessly call “he” or “she” because of their appearance.
really supporting nonbinary people means understanding that theres no visual tell – you wont recognise all of us as nonbinary on sight. you have to actually LISTEN to us. you have to BELIEVE us. and it means challenging your assumptions about gender, starting with the assumption that youre an ally to trans people while youre still doing puerile shit like gendering body parts and clothes.
NONBINARY LOOKS LIKE ANYBODY. ANY BODY CAN BE NONBINARY.
I once saw someone point out something I hadn’t really considered before- libraries are one of the only places that are warm and dry where you can stay for long periods of time if you have no money. If you’re someone with nowhere to go during the daytime, they provide a safe environment in which to keep a roof over your head for a while- and all while you can access information.
So yes. This.
It’s weird…libraries almost feel /wrong/ now. It’s like I walk in and think “This is great…where do I put my money?”
I used to work on a campus library and if you want someplace to put your money, so to speak, make sure you put books back in the designated areas. I know you think you’re being helpful by reshelving, but even if you pull something out to read a couple paragraphs just stick it in the basket for things you didn’t want. I don’t care if you know EXACTLY where you are. In academic libraries (at least in Texas) our funding was determined by how many books people looked at. So we got additional funding based on books not being reshelved. If there’s a designated shelf/basket for things you don’t want, stick things in it!
What @standbyyourmantis said about not reshelving is true for public libraries, too. Our funding is dictated largely by how ‘used’ we are, so we scan all the items that are laying about as In House Use. That, tied with Reference Count and Door Counter numbers (we have to manually put in the time we take for references) to prove we’re providing a needed service. We also have to count the number of people who come for our programs, which not only helps funding but shows that the programming/services are needed, as well. So, basically, if you want to feel like you’re making sure we’re getting paid and staying around, keep these in mind.
I didn’t know that’s why you’re not supposed to reshelf!
Wow! That’s astounding!
LIBRARIES!!!
I’ve lost how many times I get asked about how much it costs to get a library card. It’s free. Everything is free unless it’s late or you lose an item.
Free. Free. Free. Free.
Not to mention they have programs for kids and adults, activities, usually have info on local food pantries, access to the internet, etc, etc
i never talk about these things but i can’t remain silent.
i know tumblr doesn’t give a SHIT when things happen in countries outside the “most popular ones” (such as the usa & england). it’s true, don’t lie to me. y’all don’t give A FUCK. not every issue and problem in said countries gets the appropriate exposure but in general shit shows up on the news WORLD FREAKING WIDE. you set up donations, you help out, your spread the word, you say “pray for x”……
southern europe is burning.
my country is burning.
people are dying – at home, on the road, trying to run away, in their cars.
yesterday my country had 300 active fires.
people are losing EVERYTHING they own.
i have a friend that is on a train right now passing through places that have been burnt to the ground and she says the smoke is so intense it’s getting inside the train and she can barely breathe.
and yet, even though several people (myself included) have been trying to bring awareness to what has been happening in southern europe… what we get from most of you, those not part of the countries suffering, is silence. we don’t ask for money, we don’t ask for shit other than a reblog to spread awareness… something you can delete in 24/48hrs if you wish.
i don’t know what to tell you. i’m angry. i’m frustrated. i’m disappointed. i feel like i’m screaming into the void. “a reblog does nothing” – you know that’s a damn lie, you know exposure always helps, you know people start paying attention when posts on social media become popular. my country in particular is a small one, we get ZERO exposure. y’all are only starting to figure out we even fucking exist bc of the shit we’ve been winning lately.
but hell, if the EU doesn’t give a shit, why should some user on tumblr dot com?
again, i don’t know what to tell you so i’ll let the images speak for themselves:
An image captured by a Nasa satellite shows a thick plume of smoke blowing southward from the Greek island of Chios over the island of Crete
Torneros de Jamuz, Spain
Duca, Croatia
A helicopter from Italy’s civil protection service drops water on a fire near the railway between Venice and Trieste
Residents take refuge on the beach as a wildfire burns on the mountain next to the village of Lithi, on the Greek island of Chios
Men gather cattle during a forest fire in Vieira de Leiria, Marinha Grande, Portugal.
Charred trees are seen on the hills above the Cloister of Thivaidas on Mount Athos, a World Heritage Site in Greece
Portugal
This is fucking important. I am glad someone fucking spoke about this and said what they had to say. The damage is terrible, and all the evergreen, stone, even the ground is black. I was fucking terrified when Croatia was burning. The fire was near a village where I like and I thought it will burn down. I thought the church will burn down. I thought the cemetery where my grandpa is buried will burn. I still remember the smell of smoke, and when I went to check how bad is fire, my clothes and hair and skin all stunk of smoke. It didn’t go away for weeks.
This is NASA’s picture of Croatia and Montenegro burning. My fucking country was burning. Fucking reblog this. I don’t care that it isn’t UK or US, or that it doesn’t go with your blog, fucking. Reblog. It.
Not my blog type, I dont care.
God please stay safe everyone, take care
A perfect example what is wrong with the media. I can’t recall hearing about it in the German news.
I had nightmares like this when I was little.
Dear gods this is horrible!
The world is on fire, literally and metaphorically.
Last year southern italy was literally burnt down and nobody cared. Even the fucking vesuvius and fucking positano were burning. So i’m reblogging the fuck out of this
that’s what happened to Spain last year. need to reblog
The bodies of 26 people in Greece were found huddled together on a field close to the beach. A woman who had made it to the water with her 3 Yr old told the press people were running from their cars towards the water, but the fire moved so quickly she knew many of the people behind her wouldn’t make it. She found the path to the beach, but those 26 people? They didn’t find the path in time. The terror they must have suffered in their last moments doesn’t bare thinking about, but at the same time we have to confront this. If we turn away, we are complicit. These aren’t entirely natural disasters after all, this is climate change in action. And it will continue to get worse.
Every single year the same things happens in Greece, every damn summer our country is burned, people lose their houses and families, then no one cares and the cycle repeats.
Its not just a weather issue, there is always a greater evil hidden behind all of this and nothing changes.
Last year my house almost burned, we were lucky on the last minute but I can still remember the fear of the people around me, running around and trying to help, the panicked animals and the sickening anxiety that I might lose my house and my cat.
Funny how when people think about Greece all they talk about is our economic crisis and shitty politicians (and even dare to act like they know everything about those matters), yet for some strange reason, when it comes to the refugee crisis, the tensions with Turkey or the fire catastrophes, silence ensues.
I’m positive that if it were a stronger country or a “popular” one getting burned, everyone would magically transform into Mother Teresa and pray, cry and reblog everything they can.
But no, this is Greece, the “joke of Europe”, or, as all fandoms here know it, “that one ancient country with the really cool mythology and gods”. No future or innocent people to worry about, right?
This is so true. I did a test yesterday: I reblogged posts about the Fire in both my blogs (one of them being a Greece travel blog, fancy that), overall potential of 6000 followers. The number of reblogs I got was disheartening. And the vast majority was from Greek followers.
Had I reblogged something pale in comparison about USA, or at least UK or at the very least France, people would be all over it.
Had I reblogged an idiotic headcanon about Apollo or Athena or an 100% accurate analysis of
Achilles and Patroclus’s relationship, people would reblog like crazy “oh wow how cool that is” .
I had photos of Santorini island and Ancient temples in my queue and they were posted, obviously getting more attention than the people and houses being on fire, right NOW. Because bucket list goals, duh.
Speculations about if it’s Alexander’s tomb found in Egypt these days got like 300000 notes.
No one gives a shit about Greeks nowadays. No one gives a shit about small or weak countries. No one gives a shit about something that doesn’t affect them personally. I saw a Portuguese person reblogging the post because they said last year when Portugal was on fire, nobody cared and they didn’t want the same thing to happen to Greece. I feel terribly sorry and I salute that person.
And one more thing: those of you who claim you love Greece, Greek mythology, you are Philhellenes, you can explain in detail how Leonidas’ sacrifice affected the invasion of the Persians in the European continent or you even eat Gyros and dance Syrtaki, here’s a secret, you don’t know shit about Greece. Literally nothing.
Many of you might wonder “okay what is this sudden outburst, where did all this come from”. But I don’t care if it seems out of place. I know where it comes from and fellow Greeks know where it comes from. And that’s enough for me right now.
And you might wonder: “Ok are we obliged to love Greece?”. Of course not. You don’t have to love Greece. So don’t claim you do either because you do not really know shit about her. (it’s a she.)
In case anyone cares, there are more than74 people dead, over 150 severely or critically injured and more than 600 houses burnt to the ground.
I mean this as a honestly legit question from a non-greek European to you, the people affected by it:
What do you think are the best ways to help?
Other than simply caring (although what I get from your posts is that this too is a rare thing and I’m sorry to hear that). Because, caring about something is important and good, but for me what matters most are the actions caring leads to.
So, what actions can I take that would help you and the wildfire situation?
reblogging for the second reply. here’s what can you do:

This fucking site: hey net neutrality is about to die :((( please help us :(((( boost and rb everything you see even if you’re not American :((((((((( we’ll have no wifi :(((((( we need you!!!! :((((
Non-Americans: okay
Non-Americans: hey greece is basically on fire, 150 people are wounded, 53 are killed and our nature is being destroyed. we’re suspecting arson. can you please reblog some posts and help spread awareness?
This fucking site:
Allow me to elaborate on how bad things are here. 7 places are burning at the same time while in Μάτι and Κίνετα the fire not only burned trees but because off the strong winds(80 kilometes per hour) it burned houses, it burned people. Firefighters and volunteers do whatever they can with the little gear they have as always because why on earth would the goverment give money to firefighting vechiles, canadairs and literally anything else that could be useful in this country when we know that every summer someone wants to burn forests so they can build whatever they want. Anyways, people started running away once some firefighters managed to warn them to evacute ( something that others should have done because these people have to keep working so they can prevent the fore from doing anymore damage ). People started running to get to the beach which was their only hope, unfortunately some people with their families were trapped once the fire circurled the area around them leaving them with the only thing to do, wait for their end. Charred bodies were found locked in embrace the next day. Now the people who reached the beach had to wait there so they could be transferred from there to the port of Ραφήνα. Here’s a photo :
The deaths are officially at 79 by the most recent official announcement. Places like Mati, Kineta, Chania, Neos Boutsas and more are being burned to the core.
Minimum help is being given by neighboring countries. Officially 2 aircrafts from Italy and 2 from Cuprus whipe some are expected from Romania, Hungary, Spain.
There are abouy 31 people registred as missing in a web site while that doesnt mean those are all the people missing.
If you know people you know or suspect are missing call 199, the fire department.
If you are looking for someone missing don’t call hospitals, call 199, the fire department.
People got burned alive in their cars, in their homes.
Cars are literally melted by the fires.
The victims include children, thankfully the ones that survived are shocked, of course, but safe and in the hospital. The number of kids in the hospital ‘Παίδον’ (Pedon) in Athens is 11; 12 exited yesterday, and the kids left are expected to leave today.
The suspicion of the fires falls on arson. It something that Greece has suffered from a lot throughout the years. Yet we are never prepared for most of our problems whether it has to do with natural causes or not.
The situation is horrible. If you can’t help anyway else, reblog to spread awareness on the matter!
Honestly this is so much more helpful than my vent post (which I didn’t expect to blow up the way it did). If y’all are gonna boost something, boost this instead.
rebblogging AGAIN, because Greece, South Europe in general, needs help.
It looks like tumblr now automatically converts png files to jpg – if you have a fairly “clean”/simple digital art style that gets wrecked by jpg artifacts, you’ll want to put transparency somewhere in the image – tumblr will leave pngs with transparency alone (a single pixel border of transparency around the image works and is pretty non-intrusive).
Incidentally twitter has done this for a while, the same method of fixing it works there.
Article 13 got approved and that means the internet will be censored for all countries under the EU. If that happens, it’s likely bloggers from affected countries cannot post content anymore. I wouldn’t be able to post gifs, edits, icons, anything anymore. Even adding links to posts could cost money. You can get more information here and here or simply using google to find information from a source you trust. Please sign the petition here and here (everyone can sign this one apparently) to prevent this from happening. I don’t want to lose my blog.
Please sign the petition!
Help us Europeans. This is legit and really happening. If this law becomes active we will be banned from sites like tumblr.
Our blogs will dissapear!
Our fanworks like fanart and fanfiction will dissapear!
Our gifs will dissapear!
Our internet freedom will dissapear!
The internet will be censcored for us and we will no longer have acces to fan content.
This could mean your favorite writers and artists could dissapear!
PLEASE HELP US OUT!
Sign the petitions to save us from this internet censorship.
Thank you.
Do we need to have an own text now even in tumblr ;__; nowhere we are save from this huge problem!!! D: pls sign the petition!!
hey @staff kindly stop marking this stuff under sensitive content
This is awesome.
It’s also worth spreading around that you do not have to take an oath on a Bible. If they’ll let her use this, then you can use pretty much any book, which might matter for atheists and people who’s religion lacks sacred texts.
it literally doesn’t say anywhere in any law that you have to swear on a bible
