The easiest way to demoralize, defang and remove an extremistâs position from any conversation is to ignore. You do not âchallengeâ an extremist to change their views when you butt heads with them. You create a battle line, you create a clearly defined line in the sand that only furthers his cause by giving him a clear âus vs themâ to use for his own followers.
Defanging requires care, patience and most of all humility. We had one of the bloodiest wars in History over nazies and theyâre still a thing. The hell makes you think vuvuzelas and chanting will fix that?

Theyâll find enough supporters and enough curious impressionable potential converts to build their own echo chamber.
Ignoring nazis does not isolate them. Not from their supporters, and not from their victims.
Show up and protest. Share information about how fascism works, how radicalism gains converts, how bigoted ideology preys upon insecurities and fears to make itself sound attractive, how totalitarianism normalizes itself, and what sort of things the nazis did the last time they were in power.
And, if you feel safe doing so, have a good escape route, and are willing to risk the consequences, punch one of them.
The concept of âjust ignore them, they do it for attentionâ is bullshit. Sure, they want attentionâbut they donât do it for attention, they do it to drum up support for killing people.
No-platforming does not work when they already have a platform. The schools booking a nazi is giving them a platform. And cutting them a check for the luxury. I am so sick of the misinformation going around about Standing Rock. To begin with DAPL was set to go through a town called Bismarck, a town that is mostly white. The people of this town expressed concern for the pipeline leaking, and said they didnât want it.
When the pipleline was re-routed, it was set up to go through land that belongs to the Standing Rock Sioux. For those who donât know what I mean by âbelongs toâ because âOh me oh my, this is American land,â no, it isnât. Not all of it. There is land that belongs to different Native tribes. Including part of the land that the pipeline will be going through. This was not done with permission. How was this done? This was done by bulldozing up the graves of ancestors. (If that doesnât bother you, read it as the graves of our veterans; the graves of our presidentsâ families; the graves of your family.)
Outside of the media finally watching us for the last six months, the camps have been there before that. I know someone who was there on April 1, 2016. Thatâs well before the media started paying attention in August. Well before. The camps have been self-sustaining. Yes, there have been donations. Yes, donations were made in physical items, money for items, and money for legal funds. That money and those items went to keeping something beautiful alive.
People who were arrested had numbers written on their arms, they were kept in dog cages. Protectors who were peacefully in prayer had untrained dogs set on them to attack. There are photos floating around of one trainer who couldnât keep her dog, who had blood in its mouth, under control. In sub-zero conditions in the early morning protectors were hosed down with freezing water – this includes the elderly and children. (Yes, there were children. Guess what, they were getting schooled there. Self sustaining.) Police shot bean bags, rubber bullets, and flash-bang bombs into the crowds. A woman had her arm blown to pieces because of this.Â
At every point since the beginning, there has only been peace on our end. No rioting, no fire, no weapons, no alcohol, no drugs; nothing but peace. And from the end of law enforcement has been violence. Even residents had been violent, and police did nothing to them. But they sure as hell arrested people from camp for praying – a nonviolent act.
If you are not Native, you donât get to dictate what happens on our lands. I donât give a damn if the government does. The government is breaking a treaty right now, ignoring tribal sovereignty. Just because they do it, does not mean you get to. I donât care how tired you are of hearing about it. Weâre tired of having our lands stolen and having our rights violated.Â
Please boost this. Iâm tired of the propaganda being spread with the intent of bigots and settlers to erase Native voices and justify colonial violence. Also realize alot of this even beyond the pipeline, is settlers acting out of pure anti Native hatred. I work in an ER and we see suicides all the time. And we get at least 3 suicidal ideations a night. We all care about you. I promise, we do. A team of complete strangers who have worked 3+ 12 hour shifts this week who are being screamed at all day and night and probably havenât had lunch and trust me, we still love you and care about you.
We had a 16 year old patient last night who we couldnât save. We were in that room with this patient for over an hour, we did everything we could. And let me tell you, we all cried. The EMTâs, the nurses, the doctor. We all huddled together in the doctors dictation room and cried.
I went through the rest of my shift with smudged mascara and tracks on my cheeks.
I remember the names of all the patients that have taken their lives on my shifts.
I remember squeezing the hands, smoothing the hair, kissing the foreheads, and wiping away the blood and the vomit of every patient that has left me too soon.
I can still see every face that I have zipped into a body bag.
Trust me, someone cares about you. You have never met them yet. You donât ever think about them. They are never remembered when you talk about heroes and role models.
But someone loves you.

This made me cry
When I was in hospital being seen to, being bandaged and sedated and surrounded by medical staff, my family was ignoring my calls, my friends hadnât cared to check in. I felt terrified and hopeless and so very unimportant that it was taking everything it had in me to not drink the cleaning products left nearby by one of the cleaners, to make sure I finished the job properly.
There was a nurse though, who came into my room with a soft smile, who held my hand, who took away the bottles when she noticed me watching them for too long. There was a nurse that plugged in my phone to charge in case my family called back, that took away the bloody cloths the paramedics had left me with, that helped me put my hair up when it was sticking to my tear streaked face, because my arms were too sore to do it myself.
There was a nurse that saved my life twice in one night, who made me feel that I was worth being looked after, and her name was Emma and she was the most beautiful person Iâve met.
Months later, I was visiting my mother at the same hospital whilst she was incapacitated with back concerns. Whilst I sat and watched my mum sleeping, a nurse approached to check up on her. She met my gaze and she smiled immediately, face lit with recognition, and she said âoh my gosh, hey! How are you doing?â
People definitely do care about us even if we donât think they do, and to the original poster?
