10 easy ways to use less plastic and help marine life

worldofwhales:

đŸŒ±Â Â Avoid buying items packaged in plastic.

đŸŒ±Â Â Use cloth shopping bags.

đŸŒ±Â Â Skip bottled water and carry a reusable canteen.

đŸŒ±Â Â Look for creative, eco-friendly ideas to reuse your plastics, it’s fun!

đŸŒ±Â Â Bring a reusable mug when you order coffee.

đŸŒ±Â Â Say, “No straw, please!” (straws are among the most common types of plastic garbage found on beaches).

đŸŒ±Â Â Wear clothing made of natural, not synthetic, materials (polyester clothing sheds microplastics when laundered).

đŸŒ±Â Â If you must use disposable tableware, get the compostable kind.

đŸŒ±Â Â Don’t just discard electronics. Aim to repair them, sell gadgets and computer parts, or find a facility at which you can turn them in for recycling.

đŸŒ±Â Â Bring your own container for takeout and leftovers.

Yeah, I see a lot of shark positivity posts on my dash these days and I really appreciate that. But I think something is being left out of the message so I’m just gonna say that:

  • YES, Sharks are not bloodthirsty monsters. They only do what they do because they are instinctively driven to do so.
  • NO, sharks are not your friends. They are not sea-puppies, gentle babies, or whatever BS anthropomorphic “cute” term you want to use to describe them.
  • YES, you are more likely to be killed by falling coconuts and any number of improbable circumstances than you are to be killed by a shark attack,
  • NO, sharks are not “harmless”. They are apex predators of their habitats and deserve to be treated with the same respect that you would give to a wild lion, bear, or wolf. JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT LIKELY TO ATTACK YOU DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY WON’T. ACCIDENTS CAN ALWAYS HAPPEN, AND A SHARK’S PATIENCE IS NOT LIMITLESS.
  • YES, you should take every precaution to prevent a shark from “test-biting” you.
  • NO, a test-bite is not just a harmless consequence of shark curiosity. A TEST-BITE CAN KILL YOU. Just because sharks generally release people after the first nip and don’t make any effort to eat them does not mean that the bite is somehow any less deadly. You will bleed out in the water if the wound is bad enough.
  • YES, sharks are endangered and unfairly demonised and worthy of our support.
  • NO, that does not mean that anthropomorphising them and spreading false information is okay.

Please support sharks, but please, for the love of god, give them the respect they deserve when you do so. YOU ARE NOT HELPING THEM BY ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO SWIM RIGHT INTO THEIR JAWS.

I think it’s time we start spreading the word about what it mans to No-Platform racists and fascists

Time to arm up on Vuvuzelas

IGNORE HIM.

DON’T SHOW UP. DO NOT GIVE THIS MAN A PLATFORM BY SHOWING UP TO PROTEST.

The easiest way to demoralize, defang and remove an extremist’s position from any conversation is to ignore. You do not ‘challenge’ an extremist to change their views when you butt heads with them. You create a battle line, you create a clearly defined line in the sand that only furthers his cause by giving him a clear ‘us vs them’ to use for his own followers.

Defanging requires care, patience and most of all humility. We had one of the bloodiest wars in History over nazies and they’re still a thing. The hell makes you think vuvuzelas and chanting will fix that?

I don’t wanna post too much about these politics ‘cause I myself have been trying to avoid some of the bad news.

But this really is the best way to handle this.  If he shows up at your school, and you want to organize a protest, organize an ignorance.  Organize your friends and those who care to just plain not go to the event.  Get as many people as you can to quietly boycott it without a word.

Along with what was just said, it’s also like, a huge, subtle, passive-aggressive fuck you.  And that’s great.

If any college ‘books’ him, IMO students should protest the hell out of the administration until the engagement is cancelled. Letters, phone calls, getting alumni involved (that’s a big one) etc.  The best is to have him not come at all.

If he does, and you can’t get the event cancelled, see if you can get people to sign up for seats and not go. If it’s an RSVP event, fill it up with empty seats.

Keep an eye on this.

Fill it up with empty seats and host a campus protest elsewhere instead.

“Ignore him”

Y’all must be white and sure as fuck not Jewish.

I could not disagree with @thebrayton and @icebrigadedoesthings more, and my life might ACTUALLY depend on it. Opposition must be loud, present, and constant. IGNORING Nazis and their ilk got us in this position in the first place! When you ignore someone quietly IT KEEPS ON GOING. Yeah, we had a war and it was violent and we had it because guess what??? NO ONE WANTED TO DEAL WITH HITLER. The world was economically depressed, exhausted, and had lost most of a generation to The Great War.

So people ignored the nazis, they ignored fascism, and MILLIONS DIED. But then we DID go to war, because after we ignored them and quietly stood by, shit got real and we realized we didn’t have a fucking choice. Maybe a war could have been prevented with some screaming and vuvuzelas.

And then, after the bloody war you mentioned, being a nazi, being fascist of any kind, became so anethema that they didn’t dare show their faces without enduring violence. They were the ultimate evil, the bad guy in every movie.

But then, like the one ring (see I used a fantasy reference because that’s the only shit you people understand) Nazis went into hiding and so people forgot about them. They came back with a new face and called themselves alt-right, and they JUST TOOK OVER A WORLD SUPER POWER. Yeah that’s right, on the fcking Holocaust day of Remembrance a fascist proto-dictator just signed an executive order to turn away millions from safety and succor. One stroke of a pen to deny people who ALREADY LIVED HERE the right to get in.

You legit think just fucking ignoring this dude and people like him is gonna work? Because I promise you that will just make him stronger as people realize he faces no opposition. What’s ACTUALLY worked so far punching him in his smug Nazi face, repeatedly. We need to make nazis FUCKING SCARED and that doesn’t happen by some bullshit, milquetoast, white moderate fucking NONSENSE like ignoring people into submission. Seriously what the actual fuck are you even TALKING about?????

With the day we’ve had today, for you to say some shit like this is just
 fuck you. FUUUUUUUUUCK YOU

PROTEST NAZIS

PUNCH NAZIS

SCARE NAZIS

DO NOT IGNORE NAZIS IF YOU DON’T WANT TO DIE.

IGNORING BULLIES FLAT-OUT

DOES

NOT

WORK

IT DOES NOT WORK

IT HAS NEVER WORKED

IT WILL NEVER WORK

AND IF IT DOESN’T WORK FOR THE MOUTHY LITTLE SHIT ON THE PLAYGROUND IN 4TH GRADE

WHAT IN THE FRESHLY-SHAVEN

F U C K

MAKES YOU THINK IT WILL WORK

ON

GODDAMNED

NAZIS?

WE MUST BE VOCAL

WE MUST BE PRESENT

WE MUST BE SEEN TO STAND IN OPPOSITION

IGNORING NAZIS

DOES

NOT

WORK

They’ll find enough supporters and enough curious impressionable potential converts to build their own echo chamber.

Ignoring nazis does not isolate them. Not from their supporters, and not from their victims.

Show up and protest. Share information about how fascism works, how radicalism gains converts, how bigoted ideology preys upon insecurities and fears to make itself sound attractive, how totalitarianism normalizes itself, and what sort of things the nazis did the last time they were in power.

And, if you feel safe doing so, have a good escape route, and are willing to risk the consequences, punch one of them.

The concept of “just ignore them, they do it for attention” is bullshit. Sure, they want attention—but they don’t do it for attention, they do it to drum up support for killing people.

No-platforming does not work when they already have a platform. The schools booking a nazi is giving them a platform. And cutting them a check for the luxury. I don’t know how to explain it any more clearly than that–you can’t no-platform someone by ignoring them while they take the platform. That’s also known as ‘stood by and did nothing while it went down’.

Protest, do what you can to pressure the school into dropping it, do what you can to keep students who are visibly clearly part of marginalized groups safe, organize to intimidate white supremacists to where they know it’s social suicide to attend. Publicize who does go.

The audacity to add your ‘Do Nothing In Style’ politics to a Jewish person’s post!

THIS is what you should do: Buy 6 collapsible vuvuzelas for $21 on amazon. Find 5 friends with no musical talent whatsoever to join you. Ideally, find more people to stand with you. Go to the thing. Play your best approximation to Yakety Sax whenever a nazi opens his mouth.

If you can’t be a social justice warrior and punch a nazi, be a social justice bard and soundpunch him.

Is there any way to find out which campuses he’s visiting without giving him ad revenue?

I am so sick of the misinformation going around about Standing Rock. To begin with DAPL was set to go through a town called Bismarck, a town that is mostly white. The people of this town expressed concern for the pipeline leaking, and said they didn’t want it.

When the pipleline was re-routed, it was set up to go through land that belongs to the Standing Rock Sioux. For those who don’t know what I mean by “belongs to” because “Oh me oh my, this is American land,” no, it isn’t. Not all of it. There is land that belongs to different Native tribes. Including part of the land that the pipeline will be going through. This was not done with permission. How was this done? This was done by bulldozing up the graves of ancestors. (If that doesn’t bother you, read it as the graves of our veterans; the graves of our presidents’ families; the graves of your family.)

Outside of the media finally watching us for the last six months, the camps have been there before that. I know someone who was there on April 1, 2016. That’s well before the media started paying attention in August. Well before. The camps have been self-sustaining. Yes, there have been donations. Yes, donations were made in physical items, money for items, and money for legal funds. That money and those items went to keeping something beautiful alive.

People who were arrested had numbers written on their arms, they were kept in dog cages. Protectors who were peacefully in prayer had untrained dogs set on them to attack. There are photos floating around of one trainer who couldn’t keep her dog, who had blood in its mouth, under control. In sub-zero conditions in the early morning protectors were hosed down with freezing water – this includes the elderly and children. (Yes, there were children. Guess what, they were getting schooled there. Self sustaining.) Police shot bean bags, rubber bullets, and flash-bang bombs into the crowds. A woman had her arm blown to pieces because of this.

At every point since the beginning, there has only been peace on our end. No rioting, no fire, no weapons, no alcohol, no drugs; nothing but peace. And from the end of law enforcement has been violence. Even residents had been violent, and police did nothing to them. But they sure as hell arrested people from camp for praying – a nonviolent act.

If you are not Native, you don’t get to dictate what happens on our lands. I don’t give a damn if the government does. The government is breaking a treaty right now, ignoring tribal sovereignty. Just because they do it, does not mean you get to. I don’t care how tired you are of hearing about it. We’re tired of having our lands stolen and having our rights violated.

Please boost this. I’m tired of the propaganda being spread with the intent of bigots and settlers to erase Native voices and justify colonial violence. Also realize alot of this even beyond the pipeline, is settlers acting out of pure anti Native hatred. People don’t understand unless they have lived in the Midwest, just how deep white supremacy is there.

Reading about abusive men and the way they think. Very unsettling and an incredible book so far. Here are my very professional notes.

what book is this?

This is from “Why Does He DO That” by Lundy Bancroft.

I’m so glad I’m seeing more and more Lundy Bancroft quotes on my dash because this book CHANGES THE LIVES OF ABUSE VICTIMS.

The programs run for rehabilitating abusive men through the courts? Bancroft DESIGNED THEM. His programs are replicated ALL OVER THE WORLD.
He literally wrote THE book on abuser rehabilitation.

Here’s a link to a pdf copy. If you haven’t read this book yet, read this book.

Can we talk about how it seems like the entirety of the book is online on PDF, this making it accessible to anyone with an internet connection?

That is how we stop abuse.

We enable everyone to know what it looks like, so that when it happens, they can shut it down.

Arm yrself with knowledge!

Changed my life, would reccomend.

Reblogging for the PDF link.

Girl-on-girl hate is women attacking each other for their body type, skin color, hair, race, etc. instead of supporting and defending each other.

Girl-on-girl hate is not women calling out other women’s racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.

Don’t try to use a twisted definition of feminism to demonize women who have the courage to call out unacceptable behavior when they see it.

queercassianandor:

normalize trans bodies in wlw/mlm settings

when you say things like “trans inclusive” dont then turn around and only include descriptions of cis women in your sapphic poetry or only post art that only has cis men

if you’re cis and want to be “trans inclusive” make damn sure you’re actually trying to correct any transphobia that you have and correct any internal ideas that cis men/women are the only ones that belong in mlm/wlw spaces

also, normalize wlw/mlm relationships that don’t have any cis people in them. we dont need to date cis people to be considered “actual” wlw/mlm

it’s also okay for trans people to avoid dating cis people all together (whether for safety reasons or because of past traumas)

just. yah idk make sure that you actually mean it when you say that you’re trans inclusive and actively try to work on not being transphobic

(yr encouraged to rb if yr cis)

please don’t ever think that no one cares about you

I work in an ER and we see suicides all the time. And we get at least 3 suicidal ideations a night. We all care about you. I promise, we do. A team of complete strangers who have worked 3+ 12 hour shifts this week who are being screamed at all day and night and probably haven’t had lunch and trust me, we still love you and care about you.

We had a 16 year old patient last night who we couldn’t save. We were in that room with this patient for over an hour, we did everything we could.
And let me tell you, we all cried. The EMT’s, the nurses, the doctor. We all huddled together in the doctors dictation room and cried.

I went through the rest of my shift with smudged mascara and tracks on my cheeks.

I remember the names of all the patients that have taken their lives on my shifts.

I remember squeezing the hands, smoothing the hair, kissing the foreheads, and wiping away the blood and the vomit of every patient that has left me too soon.

I can still see every face that I have zipped into a body bag.

Trust me, someone cares about you. You have never met them yet. You don’t ever think about them. They are never remembered when you talk about heroes and role models.

But someone loves you.

damn
.

This made me cry

When I was in hospital being seen to, being bandaged and sedated and surrounded by medical staff, my family was ignoring my calls, my friends hadn’t cared to check in. I felt terrified and hopeless and so very unimportant that it was taking everything it had in me to not drink the cleaning products left nearby by one of the cleaners, to make sure I finished the job properly.

There was a nurse though, who came into my room with a soft smile, who held my hand, who took away the bottles when she noticed me watching them for too long. There was a nurse that plugged in my phone to charge in case my family called back, that took away the bloody cloths the paramedics had left me with, that helped me put my hair up when it was sticking to my tear streaked face, because my arms were too sore to do it myself.

There was a nurse that saved my life twice in one night, who made me feel that I was worth being looked after, and her name was Emma and she was the most beautiful person I’ve met.

Months later, I was visiting my mother at the same hospital whilst she was incapacitated with back concerns. Whilst I sat and watched my mum sleeping, a nurse approached to check up on her. She met my gaze and she smiled immediately, face lit with recognition, and she said “oh my gosh, hey! How are you doing?”

People definitely do care about us even if we don’t think they do, and to the original poster?

Your faces are never forgotten either.

You’re more than heroes to me.

I m sobbing this is such a great reminder. Somebody loves you.
