Cleaning. A Hive. Is Not. Stealing.
Hives. Need. To Be Cleaned. Or The Bees. Will Swarm. And. Probably. Die.
Some companies add high fructose corn syrup to their end product to bulk up honey batches for retail sale, that is true. But even if it does get fed to the bees, do you know what high-fructose syrup of any sort is?
FUCKING SUGAR WATER THAT’S BEEN BOILED DOWN FOR A HIGHER SUGAR CONTENT.
And what are we supposed to do with the wax and honey that gets scraped off the cleaned frames? Dump it in the trash? When it’s full of valuable nutrients? I don’t think so.
And you know what, I’m gonna stop right here, because you need to start citing some sources on this whole “toxic sugar substances” and “wing clipping” business. Show me something that comes from a reputable scientific journal and not a vegan editorial.
Go ahead. I’ll wait.
Ok I did an EXTENSIVE research project on bees in HS (like half the semester long) and heard none of this nonsense. Moreover, I had a friend who owned an apiary and he knew people who also owned apiaries and from what I gather, the bees thrived.
Also, how in the hell would the bees be able to gather pollen and nectar if their wings are clipped?!
I think the implication is supposed to be that flightless bees are kept in a box eating nothing but sugar water so that they can make honey.
Which is logistically impossible, because bees reproduce so quickly that the keeper wouldn’t be able to keep up with the wingclipping fast enough to make it practical on the scale that is needed for industrial beekeeping.
And also straight sugar water does not make good honey, you NEED nectar to make that happen, and any beekeeper would tell you so.
And besides all that, honeybees are far too valuable a commodity as pollinators for anyone to clip their wings and keep them from flying. No beekeeper in their right mind would remove the ability of a bee colony to perform their natural functions as pollinators, let alone on an industrial scale.
Complete hogwash.
Like I was unsure about the ethics of using honey and beeswax for human consumption/use, but THIS ^^^ and honeybees especially will keep making honey indefinitely, even when they need the room for babies. When they need more room for babies and are overcrowded, the hive will try to split and they’ll swarm and try to find a new place to live. Most hives that split don’t survive. Cleaning the hive and removing excess honey to make more room for more honey and babies, ensures the health and viability of the hive.
