Its even worse than that. I’m living through it. Not only are schools closing, hospitals are collapsing. Only around 9% of the island has electricity and it comes and goes at times.
People are dying in hospitals because of lack of diesel for the generators, a lot of the water is now infected, there are disease outbreaks and scareceness of food. I am safe, but many are not.
Some have water, others don’t. We need help. Sending money would be helpful but what would help even more would be sending water filters, filtering water bottles, food, medicine, if somehow possible diesel.
All of you reblogging this news helps, but what we need is physical help. If you can’t, then spread the word, but God if you can send supplies… Please… PLEASE do. We are dying. Help us, help us save ourselves. Help us save our people. Help us save out ISLAND.
If you’re not in a position to ship or transport useful items to the island (which is sure as heck the case for me in New Zealand) then the best thing you can do is give money to a reputable relief organisation operating in the area.
H.R. 620 would completely change the way in which a business is required to comply with the ADA. Instead of requiring that a business comply proactively, the bill would place the burden on the individual who is being denied access. This bill proposes that after an individual with a disability is denied access she must first notify the business owner, with exacting specificity, that her civil rights were violated, and then wait for six months to see if the business will make “substantial progress” toward access, before going to a court to order compliance.
Business owners can spend years out of compliance and face no penalty even after they receive notice, so long as the owners claim “substantial progress.” By allowing a business an endless amount of time to become compliant with the ADA’s reasonable requirements, H.R. 620 removes any incentive for a business to proactively ensure that people with disabilities have access. Instead, the bill encourages businesses to just wait until an individual’s civil rights are violated before making any changes.
And ya’ll wonder why I scream at people who try and tell me about how expensive and complicated the ADA is to comply with / enforce.
It’s that shit that gives bill like this their strength. Call your representatives. Use Resist Bot. Disabled folk AND OUR ABLE-BODIED ALLIES need to FLOOD the offices of our representatives and let them know that this bill will should not even be debated much less made law.
Do what you can from where you are and demand that those who can do more step up. I know we’re tired and I know it’s hard but don’t give up. Save yourself one last spoon and make sure the edges are good and sharp.

Hey so fun fact, my dad is good friends the woman who currently has this job and she told him that Trump’s admin is trying to force her out. They started advertising the job before they actually told her they were transferring her so she’d have to reapply.
Her name is Catherine (Cassie) Conley, and she’s a badass MIT grad that works as NASA’s planetary protection officer, which sounds super cool (though she says not as cool as the galactic administrator). The job is basically the only one in xenobiology (space life) and it’s her life’s work. She’s been doing this job for over 10 years and now Trump wants her out.
I’m beyond pissed that this keeps going around. I know it sounds like a joke job, but it’s a legitimate career that’s being taken away from literally one of the most intelligent women in the country by this asscactus of a presidency.

I was actually reading about this job in an NPR article and it sounds REALLY important. the job basically means you make sure we don’t contaminate any planets and anything we bring back like rocks or soil, etc doesn’t do the same here.
I’m a toddler teacher of fourteen little humans, I live for my job and the parents of those small humans who have so much faith in me. Unfortunately, I’m not loved by all. My Director/boss has always had an issue with me since she started the center. My old director, her new boss, has nothing but praise for me and has often told me that she has mentioned me positively to my current director before.
This did not help. On April 4th, 2017 after my 10 hour shift my director stops me as I’m walking out of the center to talk. She placed me under unpaid suspension due to an incident that wasn’t an incident at all. (I say this because I’ve already spoken to the investigator and she was so baffled as to why the incident landed on her desk she didn’t know how to proceed. And simply talked positively about how important toddler teachers are. Along with the fact my director was seen bawling after I left, when talking to my old director and my assistant director; both of whom weren’t present when I was suspended – against protocol)
I’m 32 weeks pregnant. I have a car payment, car insurance payment, medical bills and medicine costs for not only my pregnancy but the treatment of my bipolar. My husband has been pulling exhausting shifts to cover my portion of rent, utilities & gas for my car. He has just as many financial obligations as me plus he’s paying $2,000 on April 18th for our taxes.
I need help. The stress of my current employment situation; with working under a boss who dislikes me so much she would put me on unpaid suspension, the stress of financial obligations and the stress of being a new mother isn’t good.
What every you can do, I’m eternally grateful. I just want to have a healthy last trimester and a safe labor without the stress and heartache this has all brought on.
